2.1References & Inspiration

I explored different character references from animation and comics to study silhouette, proportions, and personality traits. I was particularly inspired by sharp shapes and exaggerated facial features to create a humorous but intimidating character design.

2.2Character Description
Age :37
Gender :masculinity
Body Type :strong
Internal:single-minded
Personality :Funny and quirky
Attitude:affine
Form Language Analysis
The character design mainly uses sharp and angular shapes to create a strong and intimidating appearance. The long pointed ears, sharp collar, and triangular body silhouette help emphasize confidence and authority. At the same time, some rounded facial features and exaggerated expressions were added to make the character feel more humorous and approachable instead of overly serious.
Proportion Analysis
The character was designed with exaggerated proportions, including large ears, broad shoulders, and oversized feet to create a more stylized cartoon appearance. These proportions help make the character more visually recognizable and expressive during animation.

2.4.3 Character Description
Age :37
Gender :masculinity
Body Type :strong
Internal:single-minded
Personality :Funny and quirky
Attitude:affine
Form Language
The character mainly uses sharp and angular shapes to create a strong and intimidating appearance. The long pointed ears, sharp collar, and triangular silhouette help emphasize confidence, maturity, and authority. At the same time, some rounded facial features and exaggerated expressions were added to balance the design and give the character a humorous and quirky personality.
Proportion
The character was designed with exaggerated proportions, including large ears, broad shoulders, oversized shoes, and a long coat to create a more stylized cartoon appearance. These proportions help improve the character’s visual readability and make the movements more expressive during animation.
Silhouette
The silhouette was designed to remain recognizable through the character’s large ears, wide coat shape, and strong triangular body structure. Even in a fully black silhouette, the character can still be identified clearly because of the distinctive overall shape.
Colour Study
The final colour palette mainly uses brown, black, grey, and red tones to reflect the character’s mature and mysterious personality. The darker colours help create a stronger and more serious appearance, while the red accents on the eyes and cigarette add visual contrast and strengthen the intimidating atmosphere of the character.

3.Feedback
week4
During Week 4, the lecturer taught us how to search for suitable reference images for character design. In class, the lecturer also demonstrated how to draw a character by combining different references and explained how reference images can be used to develop original character ideas instead of directly copying existing designs.
week5
The lecturer mentioned that the character’s head-to-body proportions were not fully consistent and needed further adjustment. Some smaller details also required improvement to make the design look more refined. During this class, the lecturer also taught us the basics of background drawing and explained how background elements can support the overall character and scene design.
4.reflection
This project helped me better understand the importance of character design in animation. Through researching references, sketching different ideas, and refining the design based on feedback, I learned how shapes, proportions, colours, and expressions can influence a character’s personality and visual identity.I also improved my understanding of silhouette readability and how exaggerated proportions can make a character more recognizable and expressive. During the design process, I experimented with different facial features, poses, and colour choices to create a balance between a mature and intimidating appearance while still keeping the character humorous and visually interesting.Overall, this project allowed me to develop my creativity and gain more confidence in creating original character designs for animation.
