Exercise 2 - Type and Play
Task 3: Type Exploration and Application
3.REFLECTION
Experience
This semester, I took the Advanced Typography course, which helped me strengthen and expand the typographic knowledge I gained from earlier modules. Compared with previous courses, this module focused more on independent thinking and personal design decisions rather than following fixed instructions. At the start, I often doubted my own ideas and felt unsure about my design choices. However, through repeated practice and feedback, I gradually became more confident in my workflow and creative direction.
The projects pushed me to think more deeply about typography, especially how to develop concepts while still respecting design principles. I also challenged myself to explore unfamiliar styles and express my own ideas more clearly through type. With guidance from Mr. Vinod, I learned to review my work critically and make continuous improvements, which helped raise the overall quality of my designs.
Observations
During this module, I realized that typography demands a high level of patience and attention to detail. Many problems in my work were not related to the main concept, but to small technical issues such as spacing, alignment, and layout balance. These have always been weaker areas for me, so this course encouraged me to slow down and carefully review each stage of the design process. Once these details were refined, the visual outcome became much stronger.
In the past, I usually felt satisfied as long as I completed a task and met the basic requirements. I rarely reflected deeply on how my work compared to professional standards. However, in this course, I changed my approach. Before starting a design, I now spend more time researching strong references and analyzing high-quality examples. After finishing my work, I compare it with these references, which helps me clearly identify weaknesses and areas for improvement. This change in workflow has been very valuable for my development.
Findings
Through this module, I learned that typography is not merely a decorative or secondary element, but an essential tool for visual communication. The choice of type can strongly affect how information is interpreted and how audiences emotionally respond to a design. This understanding made me more aware of the responsibility involved in typographic decisions, especially when typography plays a central role in the visual outcome. I now view typography as a medium that conveys meaning and emotion, rather than just a visual form.
